Mission:

Provide quality education for low income students in Egypt

Description:

A 2007 report by the World Bank concluded, “Egypt’s education system is not currently producing results sufficient for achieving international competitiveness or enhancing equity, especially considering the level of investment in the education sector.”[1] The report went on to highlight a wealth gap in achievement, between Egyptians in the poorest and wealthiest communities, that was larger than any other in the Middle East and North Africa.[2] In order to achieve sustainable development and transformative change in Egypt, this dichotomy must change. The poorest communities of Egyptians must be afforded quality education. YALLA (Youth Academy of Leadership, Learning, and Advancement) is an initiative to jumpstart efforts to improve educational quality by establishing a summer program for low income youth that will attempt to implement innovative teaching practices along with purposeful curriculum in order to maximize student’s academic and social growth.            Specifically, the summer program will run the measure of a school day for three to four weeks, and it will engage students in academic classes as well as communal development projects. The curriculum will therefore focus on achieving high academic growth in literacy and numeracy, as measured through benchmarks, as well as developing skills in social interaction, organization, and technology. In order to achieve such results, high emphasis will be placed on teacher training and development, and in establishing a collaborative, professional, and goal oriented work place structure. Finally, data collected from the results of the program will be used to inform the growth of YALLA including future education projects.   [1] World Bank 2007. “Improving Quality, Equality, and Efficiency in the Education Sector: Fostering a Competent Generation of Youth.” Education Sector Policy Note. pp 13.
